Mojacar Pueblo

No other corner of Andalucia can boast such a rich and close heritage with its Moorish past as does Mojacar. Situated in the south eastern province of Almeria, Mojacar enjoys an excellent location and is protected from behind by the Cabrera mountain range and overlooks the Mediterranean sea. With its southerly location and proximity to Africa this all contributes to assuring Mojacar an exceptional subtropical climate with temperatures at an average of 21 degrees Celsius.

Mojacar Beach enforces a building restriction of two storeys which has ensured the charm of the area. The Beach is 17 kilometres long, with a large part being designated an area of natural beauty. Only 7 kilometers have been developed and there are European Flag awards for cleanliness. There are some very attractive coves and villages close by and to the north of Mojacar is the town of Garrucha with its fishing port, restaurants and lively Friday Market. The symbol of Mojacar is Indalo or Mojacar Man. This magical totem brings protection and good luck and from times past was always painted onto the fronts of houses keeping away the 'evil eye' and protecting those within from storms. The figure might be interpreted to be a man holding a rainbow between his outstretched arms. The original totem is thought to be around 4500 years old but the name Indalo was coined by a group of artists and intellectuals who settled in Mojacar in the early 1960's and the totem now signifies the whole province of Almeria.
